Jaguar revealed the Type 01, the production version of its Type 00 concept, at an event in New York.
The four-door electric grand tourer has three motors making 1,016 hp, up to 400 miles of EPA range and 350-kW charging. It's the first new car Jaguar will sell after two years with no new models, and more than 50,000 people have registered interest. Orders open in early 2027, with deliveries planned for the second half of the year.
What to know
- Jaguar revealed the Type 01, the production version of its Type 00 concept, at an event in New York on October 6.
- Three motors make 1,016 hp, enough for 0 to 62 mph in a claimed 3.2 seconds, the most powerful Jaguar road car ever.
- A 118-kWh battery gives up to 400 miles of EPA range, and 350-kW charging adds 200 miles in 13 minutes.
- Orders open at the start of 2027, with first deliveries planned for the second half of that year.
Jaguar revealed the Type 01 on Tuesday night in New York. It's the finished, four-door version of the pink concept that set the internet on fire two years ago. Now the fun part: is this the car that makes the whole rebrand make sense?
Wait, what happened to Jaguar?
Quick recap, because this story has had more twists than most car launches.
- November 2024: Jaguar launched a new brand identity with an ad campaign that showed no cars at all.
- December 2024: it revealed the Type 00 concept in Miami, in a bright pink paint called Rhodon Rose. People either loved it or really, really didn't.
- Since then: two years without selling a single new car, as Wired notes, while Jaguar rebuilt itself as an electric-only luxury brand.
Hagerty reports the production car was delayed by more than a year. It blames two things: a fast-changing market for electric cars, and a costly cyberattack at Jaguar Land Rover.
The plot twist: Hagerty says the production car actually came first. The Type 00 concept was developed from it, so the shape you see now was already waiting in the wings when the storm broke.
So what does it look like?
Very much like the concept, minus the pink and plus two doors. Wired says the extra doors make the design easier to read, and the nose has been softened a little.
The basics stayed:
- Proportions: a long, flat hood, a low roofline and a solid tailgate with no glass.
- Wheels: 23 inches as standard, with 21-inch wheels as an option, Hagerty reports.
- Size: 5,235 mm long and 1,403 mm tall, Wired reports.
- Lights: the rear lamps hide behind horizontal louvers until they switch on.
Hagerty explains a detail that sounds odd for an electric car. Jaguar calls it "the luxury gap": the long stretch of body between the front wheels and the windshield. It takes up 17% of the car's length, the same share as on the classic E-Type. Electric cars don't need a long hood, so this one is there purely for looks, like a tuxedo that has no pockets.
Despite all that bodywork, Wired reports it's the most aerodynamic Jaguar ever, with a drag coefficient of 0.23. Active vanes in the grille open only when needed, and a spoiler pops up at speed.
How fast is it?
Fast. The Type 01 is the most powerful Jaguar road car ever made, with 1,016 horsepower from three electric motors.
| Spec | Type 01 |
|---|---|
| Power | 1,016 hp (1,030 PS) |
| Torque | 1,006 lb-ft (1,365 Nm) |
| Motors | 260 kW front, two 310 kW rear |
| 0 to 62 mph | 3.2 seconds (claimed) |
| 62 to 112 mph | about 4 more seconds |
Hagerty points out that Jaguar didn't chase a sub-2-second launch like the Lucid Air Sapphire. Its reviewers rode in a prototype and found the push "imperious but calibrated to never be brutal."
Hagerty estimates the car weighs about 6,000 pounds, split exactly 50/50 between the axles. Air springs, torque vectoring across the two rear motors and all-wheel steering help it feel smaller than it is. Wired, which was also driven in it, says the acceleration "feels like it never ends."
How far can it go on a charge?
This is where Jaguar tries to answer the usual worries about electric cars before you raise them.
- Battery: 118 kWh usable, on an 850-volt system.
- Range: up to 400 miles on the EPA cycle, or 450 miles on the European WLTP test.
- Highway range: about 320 miles at sustained highway speeds.
- Charging: up to 350 kW, adding 200 miles in 13 minutes.
By the numbers: Hagerty reports that Jaguar Land Rover's own data from more than 900,000 vehicles in 51 countries shows this range covers 99.7% of journeys.
The car sits on the Jaguar Electric Architecture, a platform built only for electric cars. According to Hagerty, two SUVs will follow on the same base.
In real life A 200-mile top-up in 13 minutes means a coffee and a bathroom stop on a road trip, as long as the station has a 350-kW charger. On a slower charger, plan on a longer lunch.
What's it like inside?
The cabin is split by a tall central spine that runs the full length of the car. It creates four separate seating zones. Jaguar's press material says the interior is inspired by the layered tones of travertine stone, Robb Report notes.
- Screens: a 24-inch OLED display in front of the driver and a 7-inch, phone-style touchscreen in the middle.
- Buttons: none for climate and audio, Wired reports. It's all touchscreen.
- Seats: 12-way electric adjustment and a "hot stone massage effect."
- Roof: panoramic glass with adjustable virtual blinds.
- Materials: brass-inspired finishes, Kvadrat wool fabric and NeoGrain vegan leather, per Hagerty.
- Trunk: 450 liters, or 1,000 liters with the rear seats folded.
The catch: there's no rear window. A camera feeds a "ClearSight" rearview display set into the soundbar at the base of the windshield. Wired says it's placed at the same height as the door mirrors, so your eyes don't have to refocus as much.
How hard was it to build?
Very, by Jaguar's own telling. Wired reports Jaguar built more than 150 prototypes, drove 700,000 miles and filed more than 360 patents for the car.
The favorite story is the "impossible panel." It's one unbroken sheet of aluminum running more than 3 meters from the windshield pillar to the rear. Hagerty says it's pressed in five planes, with three feature lines meeting at one point.
Jaguar's own software said it couldn't be made. Wired reports it took about 22 weeks and 1,500 hours of development, reportedly with help from someone who came out of retirement.
Robb Report adds how the design was picked. Jaguar built 18 full-size models in an internal contest called Project Renaissance. Design lead Andy Wheel said trying to please everyone gives you "something which is vanilla."
What will it cost, and who's it for?
Why it matters: this is a big jump upmarket. Glover told Robb Report that Jaguar's average US sale used to be around $60,000 to $70,000.
The exact price is still a little fuzzy:
- Robb Report: Glover said the Type 01 will start at $130,500 in the US.
- Hagerty: around $160,000, or £120,000 in the UK, before tariffs and taxes.
- Wired: around $170,000, noting no confirmed pricing yet.
Glover is betting on new buyers. Robb Report says more than 50,000 people have registered interest, and 78% of them are new to Jaguar. "Great design should have the confidence to polarize," Glover said.
He also told Wired the car has to win on looks and feel, not just because it's electric. "Cars have got to earn their right in somebody's garage," he said.
The big picture: it's a tough moment for luxury electric cars. Hagerty notes that sales of some high-end electric models have slowed, while new rivals keep coming: the Mercedes-AMG GT, the Porsche Taycan, the Audi RS e-tron GT and the Lucid Air. Jaguar's sister brand also just launched the Range Rover Sport Electric.
What's next: order books open at the start of 2027, and first deliveries are planned for the second half of the year. Robb Report says Jaguar will even bring a test car to a buyer's door.
What it means for you
- If you're shopping for a luxury EV: you can't order one until early 2027, so there's time to wait for real prices and first drives.
- If you road-trip: 400 miles of EPA range and 200 miles in 13 minutes put it near the top of its class, on paper.
- If you like buttons: climate and audio live on a touchscreen, and the rear view comes from a camera, so try it before you sign.
The bottom line
The Type 01 is the car Jaguar's whole reinvention was waiting for: fast, long-range and impossible to miss. Whether buyers at $130,000 and up agree is the real test, and that starts when orders open in 2027.
