The Squeeze

Peak Design, best known for backpacks and tripods, launched its first chargers, batteries and cables, led by a $99.95 Qi2.3 travel battery and a $99.95 charging station with two 25W pads.

A 65W slim charger costs $64.95 and cables run $24.95 to $39.95. Most items ship today, the battery and some cables on November 5, and global availability follows in mid-November.

What to know

  1. Peak Design announced its first collection of chargers, batteries and cables, aimed at people who want better materials and design than a typical charger.
  2. The $99.95 Wireless Kickstand Travel Battery holds 5,000mAh and is described by the company as the first Qi2.3-certified wireless charger.
  3. The $99.95 Wireless Charging Station 2-in-1 has two wireless pads that each reach 25W and can run at the same time.
  4. Most items are on sale today, the travel battery and some cables arrive on November 5, and global availability comes in mid-November.

Peak Design makes the kind of backpacks people talk about on camera trips. Now it wants a spot on your desk and in your bag with a full line of chargers.

The company just announced its first charging collection. It includes a travel battery, a two-pad charging station, a slim wall charger and a set of cables. So what is actually new here, and what does it cost?

Why is a bag company making chargers?

Peak Design is known for hard-wearing backpacks, travel bags and tripods. Its fans like clever design and solid materials.

Founder and CEO Peter Dering explained the idea this way: "Somewhere along the way, we accepted that the electronics we use every day should be cheap, disposable and just good enough." He added that the company did not set out to make another collection of chargers and cables. It set out to show how much better these everyday products could be.

In plain words, the pitch is premium. Better metal, better build, and prices to match. It is the same playbook the company used for its tripods.

What is the Wireless Kickstand Travel Battery?

This is the headline product. It costs $99.95 and comes in black or moon, a cream color.

It holds 5,000mAh. The mAh figure, short for milliamp-hours, tells you how much energy a battery stores. A bigger number means more charge for your phone.

The housing is machined anodized aluminum, which is metal cut from a block and given a hard colored coating. A matching folding kickstand lets you prop the phone up while it charges. It attaches with magnets.

Peak Design describes it as the world's first Qi2.3-certified wireless charger. That is the company's claim.

How does the kickstand work?

The kickstand folds out from the back of the battery. It holds the phone upright in portrait mode, which is the tall way, and in landscape mode, which is the wide way.

That works if your phone has MagSafe or PixelSnap. Those are the magnet systems Apple and Google use so accessories snap onto the back of a phone.

So the battery does two jobs. It tops up your phone, and it turns into a small stand for video calls, maps or a movie on a train tray.

What do Qi2 and Qi2.3 mean?

Qi, said like "chee", is the standard that lets phones charge without a cable. Qi2 is the newer version that adds magnets, so the charger snaps onto the back of a compatible phone and lines up on its own.

Qi2.3 is the latest step in that standard. It is the version Peak Design says its travel battery is certified for.

Why it matters: a standard means one charger can work with many phones. You are not locked to one brand, as long as your phone supports the magnetic charging.

By the numbers: on its own battery, the travel battery charges a phone wirelessly at up to 15W. A watt, or W, measures power. More watts usually means a faster charge.

What about the charging station?

The Wireless Charging Station 2-in-1 also costs $99.95. It comes in the same colors as the battery.

It has two wireless pads, and both reach 25W at the same time. It supports Qi2.2, the Qi2 version before 2.3.

Here is how it is built:

  • The base: made from die-cast aluminum and zinc, and it holds the first pad.
  • The arm: the second pad sits on an adjustable arm that folds flat, so the station is easier to pack.
  • The use: one pad for your phone, the other for earbuds, a watch or a second phone.

The station also has a USB-C port with a lower 5V output. That is meant for smaller gadgets, such as a smartwatch, so a third device does not need its own wall plug.

In real life At a hotel desk, you can charge your phone and a partner's phone side by side, then fold the arm flat and drop the whole station back in your bag.

What is the Dual Slim Charger?

Neither wireless charger comes with a power adapter. That is the plug part that goes in the wall.

To fill the gap, Peak Design launched the Dual Slim Charger for $64.95. It has two USB-C ports and can deliver up to 65W of power in total.

It uses GaN, which stands for gallium nitride. GaN is a material that wastes less heat than the older silicon used in chargers, so a GaN charger can be smaller. That is how this one is only half an inch thick.

So it is a flat charger instead of the small cube style that is common now. Fold-flat prongs help it slide into a bag.

What do the UltraStrand cables offer?

Peak Design also launched a line of USB-C cables called UltraStrand. Prices run from $24.95 to $39.95.

There are two kinds:

  • 60W and 480Mbps: lengths from 15 centimeters to 2 meters. This is a normal phone and tablet cable.
  • 240W and 40Gbps: lengths from 15 centimeters to 1 meter. This one suits laptops, handheld game consoles and fast data transfers.

Mbps and Gbps measure how fast data moves. The higher number is for copying big files, such as photos and videos.

Peak Design says the cables resist kinks and last longer than usual, and each one has its own clip to tame cable mess. The company also offers a lifetime guarantee across the whole collection.

The catch: these are premium prices. A cable that costs $24.95 or more is a different purchase from the three-dollar kind at a checkout counter.

When can you buy it?

Most of the new chargers and accessories are available starting today. You can order at peakdesign.com and at select retailers.

The Wireless Kickstand Travel Battery and some cable lengths arrive a few days later, on November 5. Global availability comes in mid-November.

Peak Design is stepping into a crowded field. Brands such as Anker and Belkin already sell travel batteries, multi-device stands and cables, and so do many smaller names.

The question is what Peak Design can add. Its answer is a mix of firsts, such as the Qi2.3 certification, plus premium materials, clever folding parts and a lifetime guarantee. The price is higher too.

The company is betting that its fans will pay for the build and the design. The collection page on its own site already lists the wireless stand, the travel battery, the two-in-one station and the UltraStrand cables side by side, so you can compare them in one place.

What it means for you

  • If you already own Peak Design gear, this is an easy match. The colors and materials are made to sit next to its bags and tripods.
  • If you want the cheapest charger, this line is not for you. The battery and the station each cost $99.95.
  • Check your phone first. The magnetic charging only works with phones that support Qi2 or MagSafe.
  • Plan for the wall plug. The two wireless chargers do not include an adapter, so budget for one.

The bottom line

Peak Design is taking the "buy it once" idea from bags and applying it to chargers. The products come with metal bodies, magnets, clever folding parts and a lifetime guarantee.

You will pay more for them than for a basic charger. If you care about how a thing feels and how long it lasts, that may be exactly the point.
