TikTok is adding an AI Shopping Assistant and a one-click Buy Direct checkout so you can ask about a product and buy it without leaving the app.
Both are rolling out in the US now. It's a push to keep shopping, and the money from it, inside TikTok instead of sending people to outside sites or AI tools like ChatGPT.
What to know
- TikTok launched Shopping Assistant, a conversational AI agent that answers questions about products, shipping, sizing and availability and helps you buy.
- Buy Direct lets you buy straight from a brand with one click from the For You feed, without leaving TikTok.
- Both are rolling out to users and brands in the US, built with partners including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe.
- TikTok also announced AI tools for advertisers, including Agentic Leads and a US launch of the TikTok Ad Network.
TikTok wants you to stop leaving the app when you want to buy something. The company announced on Monday an AI Shopping Assistant and a one-click checkout called Buy Direct, unveiled at Advertising Week in New York.
Both are part of what TikTok calls Agentic Commerce, a push to remove the steps between seeing a product in a video and owning it.
What is the Shopping Assistant?
It's a conversational AI agent that guides you through shopping, according to TikTok.
What it does:
- Understands context: it knows what you're looking at and asking about.
- Remembers your needs: it keeps track of your preferences throughout the conversation.
- Finds products faster: it suggests the right items for you.
- Answers practical questions: product details, shipping, sizing and availability, in real time.
- Helps you buy: purchasing happens in the same conversation.
TikTok says the assistant is built into several places in the app.
It also flips an idea TikTok tried in September, Crypto Briefing reports. That month, TikTok introduced a Seller Assistant chatbot for merchants. The new tool faces buyers instead.
What is Buy Direct?
Buy Direct is an in-app checkout that lets you buy directly from a brand without leaving TikTok.
One click from the feed: you can buy straight from the For You feed, the app's main algorithm-driven video feed, with a single click, TikTok says.
Separate from TikTok Shop: Buy Direct works separately from TikTok Shop, the app's in-house marketplace, Adweek reports. Instead of routing purchases through that marketplace, TikTok is building shopping tools into the wider app.
Who's building it with TikTok?
TikTok says it's working with commerce platforms and payment providers, including:
- Salesforce
- Shopify
- Shoplazza
- Stripe
Both features are beginning to roll out to users and brands in the US, according to Adweek.
"We're trying to move people from discovery all the way through to action, and there's a lot that we can do to bring AI to that journey," David Kaufman, TikTok's global head of monetization and product partnerships, told reporters at TikTok's New York office, Adweek reports.
Why does TikTok want this?
It's about keeping shoppers, and their money, inside the app.
By pairing a shopping assistant with direct payments, TikTok is turning its impulse-driven feed into a place where people can get answers and buy on the spot, TechCrunch notes. It could let TikTok capture more of each shopping trip, and potentially more of the transaction value, without sending users elsewhere.
The ChatGPT angle: TikTok also appears to want users to stay on its platform when they have product questions, rather than turning to outside AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT, according to TechCrunch. OpenAI has been adding shopping features too, including a virtual try-on tool for clothes, and is testing visual ads in ChatGPT.
It also puts TikTok alongside Instacart, Shipt and Amazon in the move toward AI shopping assistants, Crypto Briefing notes.
How big is shopping on TikTok?
Big, and growing.
- $81 billion: activity on TikTok helped generate $81 billion in GDP for US businesses, according to TikTok's Economic Impact Report, published last week.
- 54 million Americans said they bought a product after watching a TikTok video, the same report says.
- $15.8 billion: market research firm eMarketer estimates TikTok Shop generated about that much in US sales in 2025, roughly 18% of all US social commerce, TechCrunch reports.
TikTok Shop launched in the US in September 2023.
Advertisers are paying attention: TikTok cites Kantar's Media Reactions 2026 report, which ranked TikTok as the No. 1 platform where marketers plan to increase ad spending in 2027, with 84% of marketers advertising on TikTok.
What else did TikTok announce?
The shopping features came alongside a batch of AI tools for advertisers.
- Agentic Leads: an AI agent that helps businesses capture, qualify and convert sales leads through AI-guided conversations. It will work in TikTok direct messages and in lead forms on advertisers' own websites.
- TikTok Ad Network in the US: advertisers can extend campaigns beyond TikTok to a network of nearly 400,000 apps worldwide, with brand safety and placement controls.
- MCP connectors: TikTok's tool for building AI agents on its ads system, based on the open Model Context Protocol, is now available as a connector on platforms including Claude, Kimi, Manus, Perplexity, Replit and Snowflake. TikTok says advertisers using it for campaigns have grown more than 200% since launch.
- Smarter search ads: TikTok's automated Smart+ system now covers search ad campaigns, across keywords and creative.
- Smart+ Creative Selection: pulls advertisers' own assets, AI-generated creative and creator content into one approval workflow.
- GMV Max upgrades: TikTok Shop's automated ad tool will factor in costs like affiliate commissions, coupons and referral fees, to optimize for real return on investment.
"AI is transforming how advertiser content is created and scaled," Kaufman said in TikTok's announcement.
Why the Claude and Perplexity connectors matter
The MCP news may have the widest reach of anything TikTok announced, argues The Media Stack, a UK trade newsletter.
Campaigns from inside AI tools: a media buyer working in a general-purpose assistant like Claude, or an analyst in Snowflake, can now set up and run a TikTok campaign without opening TikTok's own Ads Manager, according to The Media Stack.
How it got here: TikTok launched its MCP at TikTok World in May. A marketplace of ready-made skills built on it, called Agentic Hub, followed at the end of June, with HubSpot, Wix, Innovid and Kochava among the early developers, The Media Stack reports.
Everyone's doing it: Google, Meta, Pinterest and Snap now offer MCP access of their own. TikTok's 200% growth figure for advertisers using its MCP came without a baseline, the newsletter notes.
Search is the target: TikTok frames its new Smart+ search ads as a way to capture the intent of users who search the app for products and ideas, intent that advertisers currently pay Google to reach, according to The Media Stack.
Is it coming to Europe?
Not all of it. Buy Direct and Agentic Leads won't launch in Europe for now, and TikTok gave no European timeline for either, The Media Stack reports. Shopping Assistant, the Smart+ search ads and the MCP connector are part of the European announcements.
TikTok says more than 200 million people in Europe use the platform. A study it commissioned from Public First put the economic value generated by businesses advertising on TikTok across the EU at €31 billion in 2025.
What it means for you
- If you shop on TikTok in the US: you may soon be able to ask an AI about a product and buy it in one tap, right from your feed.
- Watch your impulse buys: fewer steps between a video and a checkout means it's easier to spend.
- For brands: Buy Direct offers a way to sell on TikTok outside TikTok Shop, through partners like Shopify, Salesforce and Stripe.
- In Europe: don't expect one-click Buy Direct yet. TikTok hasn't given a date.
The bottom line
TikTok is launching an AI Shopping Assistant and one-click Buy Direct checkout in the US, so users can ask questions and buy without leaving the app. Alongside new AI ad tools, it's a clear bid to turn TikTok's discovery feed into a full store, and to keep shoppers from wandering off to ChatGPT or anywhere else.
