The Squeeze

Amazon named Uber Eats the official restaurant delivery partner for US Prime members, ending its Grubhub deal on Thursday.

Members can order inside the Amazon app with no Uber account and pay no delivery fee on orders over $25. Amazon and Uber already work together on cloud computing, robotaxis and Alexa+. The offer starts with $20 off a first order, and it arrives as DoorDash prepares to absorb Instacart.

What to know

  1. Amazon made Uber Eats the official restaurant delivery partner for Prime members in the United States, and the Grubhub+ perk ends Thursday.
  2. Prime members order Uber Eats food inside Amazon's app or website, with no Uber account, and pay no delivery fee on orders of more than $25.
  3. To launch the deal, Prime members get $20 off a first order of $25 or more during the first two weeks.
  4. The move lands a week after DoorDash agreed to buy Instacart for $17 billion, and gives Uber access to tens of millions of Prime shoppers.

Amazon just swapped its restaurant delivery partner: Uber Eats is in, Grubhub is out. Now the fun part: why would Amazon, which sells nearly everything, still need someone else to carry the pad thai?

What exactly did Amazon announce?

Amazon made Uber Eats its official restaurant delivery partner for Prime members in the United States. The companies announced it on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

Prime members can now order Uber Eats food from inside the Amazon Shopping app and on Amazon.com. They do not need an Uber account.

Prime members pay no delivery fee on restaurant orders of more than $25.

How does ordering work?

You pick a restaurant inside Amazon's app or website, like you would pick a product. You pay with the payment methods already saved in your Amazon account.

Amazon handles the ordering steps and the delivery alerts. Uber Eats sends the final receipt. Behind the scenes, Uber's network of restaurants and couriers does the actual work.

Uber says the setup is meant to let shoppers buy meals, groceries and household items in one place.

In real life Say you are already adding paper towels to your Amazon cart. You can now add a $30 dinner from a local restaurant on the same screen and skip the delivery fee.

What do you get on day one?

To get things moving, Amazon and Uber are offering a launch deal.

  • Delivery fee: $0 on restaurant orders over $25.
  • Launch discount: $20 off a first order of $25 or more, during the first two weeks.
  • Claimed savings: more than $175 a year, according to Amazon and Uber.
  • Account: no Uber sign-up needed.

By the numbers: the $175 figure compares the deal against paying full delivery fees on every order. You would need to order takeout several times a month to get near it.

What happens to Grubhub?

The agreement that gave Prime members Grubhub+ ends Thursday, according to an Amazon spokesperson. Grubhub+ is a paid subscription with delivery perks, and Prime members had it for free.

The spokesperson said Amazon continuously evaluates its third-party offers. It found a chance to deliver what it calls an even better restaurant delivery experience.

Grubhub could not be reached before the news was published.

How did Amazon and Grubhub get here?

The two companies go back a few years. Amazon first struck a deal with Grubhub in 2022. It offered Prime members a free Grubhub+ subscription.

Two years later, Amazon widened the deal and made the free membership an ongoing offer. Amazon also agreed with Grubhub's then owner, Just Eat Takeaway.com, to raise its stake in Grubhub by as much as 18%.

That deal worked through warrants. A warrant is a right to buy shares later at a set price. It was set to renew each year.

Then the ground shifted. Just Eat Takeaway announced plans to sell Grubhub to Wonder, a company that runs delivery-focused food halls. The price was $650 million: $150 million in cash and $500 million of Grubhub's debt.

Just Eat Takeaway had paid about $7 billion for Grubhub a few years earlier. According to its annual report, Amazon chose in December 2024 to cash out its warrants.

The partnership kept going until now.

Why would Amazon team up instead of building its own?

Amazon has tried this before. It ran its own restaurant delivery service, Amazon Restaurants, and shut it down in the US on June 24, 2019.

At the time it was a small player, with about 2% of the US market. Uber Eats, Grubhub and DoorDash together held about 80%.

Hot food is hard to move. It has to be cooked, packed and delivered within minutes by a driver who is nearby. Building that network from scratch is slow and expensive.

Partnering is cheaper. Amazon gets a restaurant option for Prime without running couriers, and Uber supplies the couriers it already has.

What does Uber get out of it?

Uber gets in front of tens of millions of Prime members. Many of them already love getting things delivered.

It also saves money. Winning new customers normally means paying for app store ads. Here, Amazon's app does the introducing.

The timing is no accident. A week ago, DoorDash agreed to buy Instacart for $17 billion. The companies expect the deal to close at the end of 2027 or in the first half of 2028, after antitrust reviews in the United States, Canada and Israel.

Antitrust reviews are checks by regulators on whether a merger would hurt competition.

DoorDash is already the biggest player. Its share of spending across the main delivery apps rose from 44% in the second quarter of 2021 to 59% in the third quarter of 2026. Uber Eats went from 16% to 18% over the same stretch.

Teaming up with Amazon is a way for Uber to push back on its larger rival.

How deep is the Amazon and Uber friendship?

This is not a first date. The new deal builds on a long list of existing agreements between the two.

  • Cloud computing: Uber uses Amazon's cloud services.
  • Robotaxis: Zoox, Amazon's self-driving subsidiary, announced in March 2026 that it would offer rides through the Uber app, starting in Las Vegas this summer and in Los Angeles by mid-2027.
  • Alexa+: Uber Eats is built into Amazon's AI assistant.

Zoox robotaxis are four-seat pods without a steering wheel or pedals.

Now the same two companies share a food delivery button too.

Is it really a big saving?

Waiving the delivery fee helps, but it does not remove the biggest parts of a takeout bill. Service fees, local regulatory charges, driver tips and menu markups still make up most of what you pay.

The $25 minimum also matters. It is less practical for a solo lunch. A typical delivery fee runs about $3 to $4, so some people may buy extra food just to avoid it.

The catch: the savings depend on how often you order. If you get takeout twice a year, this changes very little for you.

Whether the deal is enough to move the needle for Prime members remains to be seen.

What is Uber really building?

Uber wants to be the one app where many services meet. Food, rides and groceries all sit on the same platform.

The Zoox deal shows the same idea. It was the first time Zoox put its rides on a third-party platform. Zoox pods are built only for ride-hailing, and they can drive in either direction at up to 75 mph.

Uber has described its platform as the best way for makers of self-driving cars to reach riders. Waymo, the leader, reported more than 400,000 weekly rides across six US metro areas in February.

Amazon gets something similar. Instead of building every service itself, it lets partners plug into the Prime app.

What do we still not know?

Several answers are missing. Amazon has not said what specifically made Uber Eats better than Grubhub. Grubhub has not commented.

Nobody has said whether the offer will reach other countries, or how long the free delivery will last. The launch discount runs for two weeks, and the delivery perk has no announced end date.

What it means for you

  • Prime members: you can order restaurant food without leaving Amazon, and without an Uber account.
  • Grubhub+ users: if you used the free Grubhub+ perk, it ends Thursday, so check your next order.
  • Small orders: plan around the $25 line, or the fee will still show up.
  • Everyone: compare the final price with the regular Uber Eats app before you get used to the new button.

The bottom line

Amazon gave up on running its own restaurant delivery and now leans on a partner it already trusts. Uber gets a huge new doorway, and Grubhub loses a big perk.

For you, the deal is a small, useful convenience. It is not a big discount, but it is one fewer app to open.

Got questions?

Quick answers, plain words

What did Amazon and Uber announce?

Amazon made Uber Eats the official restaurant delivery partner for Prime members in the United States. Members can order food from Uber Eats directly in the Amazon app and on Amazon.com.

Do I need an Uber account to order?

No. Prime members use their existing Amazon payment methods and do not have to create an Uber account. Amazon handles the ordering and delivery alerts, and Uber Eats sends the final receipt.

How much does delivery cost for Prime members?

Delivery is free on restaurant orders of more than $25. Service fees, local regulatory charges, driver tips and menu markups can still apply, so the final bill will be higher than the food alone.

Is there a launch discount?

Yes. During the first two weeks, Prime members get $20 off their first order of $25 or more.

What happens to Grubhub+ for Prime members?

The commercial agreement that gave Prime members Grubhub+ ends Thursday, according to an Amazon spokesperson. Grubhub could not be reached for comment before the news was published.

Why did Amazon switch from Grubhub to Uber Eats?

Amazon says it continuously reviews its third-party offers and found a chance to deliver a better restaurant delivery experience. It has not given more detail than that.

How much could I save in a year?

Amazon and Uber say members could save over $175 a year. That estimate compares against paying full delivery fees on every order, so it only works if you order delivery fairly often.

Does this work outside the United States?

The announcement covers Prime members in the US only. No other countries were named.

How else do Amazon and Uber work together?

They have existing deals for cloud computing, Zoox robotaxis on the Uber app, and Uber Eats inside Amazon's Alexa+ assistant.

Can Prime members still use Uber Eats the normal way?

Nothing in the announcement changes the regular Uber Eats app. The new route is an extra way to order, built into Amazon's own app and website.
